My in-laws live up in Vermont, and at Christmas time it is generally quite cold up there. One year they treated us to a horse-drawn sleigh ride and it is one of my favorite memories. Gliding through the snow under the moonlight, I felt like I was in a Jane Austen novel. I can't believe that is how my Grandma actually got to school when she was growing up in New Hampshire. Anyways... on this sleigh ride we drank my father-in-laws concoction which is very similar to Grog. Basically steaming hot liquor.
Scary... this post makes me realize winter is a close reality. SO, more about grog. Originally, it was a term given to the watered down beer sailors in the Navy drank in the 1700's. It's gotten a bit more appealing over the years... like thisrecipe from globalgourmet.com: 1 shot rum
1 teaspoon sugar
squeeze of lime juice
cinnamon stick
boiling water
stir all ingredients, adding enough boiling water to fill mug or glass. ... maybe not my first choice for a cocktail party, but it would definitely be memorable.
